Immunotherapy (Allergy Injections or Sublingual Therapy)

Immunotherapy, Dearborn

For those patients who have very significant allergy symptoms we offer immunotherapy.  Immunotherapy can be in the form of traditional allergy injections done in our office or sublingual treatment done at home. Immunotherapy is the only treatment that actually causes a decrease in the body’s allergic immune response and reduces the dependence on medications.

Allergy Injections

Immunotherapy via allergy injections involves injecting small sterile amounts of the substances to which you are allergic to into the arm.  By getting regular metered injections of what you are allergic to, your body develops a tolerance to these allergens.  By developing a tolerance your body will not over react when exposed to them in the environment.  Allergy injections do occur over a extended period of time and the frequency of injections may depend on several factors including the severity of your allergies.  A common course of treatment may involve weekly injections for a little over a year. Injections are then frequently decreased to every 2 weeks for 1 year and then decreased to every 3rd week.  Each injection usually involves a short visit with our allergy staff members.  Waiting to see a physician is not necessary when coming in for an allergy injection.

Sublingual Treatment

Immunotherapy via Sublingual treatment involves self administering a small daily dose of what you are allergic under the tongue using a dropper.  No needles or injections are needed.  This is an excellent option for those who are unable to come to our office for regular allergy injections.
